Okay, so I tried out Reverso to see how it holds up to what I need in a writing and editing tool. While I like what it offers, there are pros and cons.

Poor writing takes away your professionalism and work credibility. But you can avoid these mistakes by using online grammar checkers for your emails, reports, and essays.

If you need a writing tool to optimize your content, you might want to consider Reverso. Keep reading for my review of Reverso and how it compares to my favorite program, Grammarly.

What is Reverso?

Reverso is a popular online translation service that includes pronunciation and dictionary tools. The company also features spelling and grammar checking tools to improve your overall writing.

Users stick to the program because it’s free and only financed by advertising. It’s also known for its ease of use. Type or speak out the word you want to translate, and then the results will show up right away.

Features of Reverso

Here are some features that Reverso can offer.

Critical Grammar and Spelling Checks

Critical Grammar and Spelling Checks

Reverso lets you fix your most cumbersome mistakes through its grammar check feature. Although, I feel like it doesn’t pick up on as much as Grammarly does. And maybe that’s due to it being a free tool. But it does its best to identify your errors in the following facets:

  • Spelling.
  • Grammar.
  • Punctuation.

Unlike other grammar checking tools like Ginger software, Reverso can spot the improper use of “your” and “you’re” in your sentences. It adheres to basic English grammar rules to ensure your writing is polished and free from grammar mistakes.

Dictionary

Reverso Dictionary

This grammar checker software has an integrated dictionary to give you a quick lookup of words and their meanings. Fine-tune your translations through the synonyms it provides and the examples in context. I really enjoyed this feature as a Fiction writer. I’m always using a thesaurus and dictionary to expand my written vocabulary.

Pronunciation

Reverso Pronunciation

Reverso allows you to listen to the pronunciation of a word or phrase by a native speaker. For example, the website will assist you if you have no idea how the French word “gâteau” sounds.

Conjugator

Reverso Conjugator

With this feature, you can conjugate verbs in different tenses and verbs. This feature is available in ten languages, including Spanish, French, Arabic, and Japanese.

Pros and Cons of Reverso

Reverso has its fair share of benefits and drawbacks. Weighing them can help you decide whether it’s worth installing or not. Personally, the cons were enough to make me stick with Grammarly.

Reverso Pros

1. Intuitive Dashboard

Registered users enjoy the clean interface of Reverso because you only need to enter your text and click on “Check.” Its user reviews hail the straightforward page for not having unnecessary buttons, texts, and designs.

2. Browser Extension Available

Reverso is not only available as a web editor. You can also access it as a mobile browser or browser extension. The extension lets you view your search and translation history for different purposes.

3. It’s Accurate

Reverso constantly improves your vocabulary through its online dictionary feature. The accurate tool improves your word list while correcting your use of the passive voice.

This English grammar checker shows accuracy in detecting simple grammar issues and spelling and punctuation errors.

If you’re unsure about using commas, hyphens, and semicolons, Reverso will come to the rescue. But it doesn’t always spot these kinds of errors.

4. Many Extra Features

Reverso’s main feature is its multilingual service, which checks for online grammar in several languages. Just check the spelling in a chosen language online, such as Russian, Arabic, or German.

But Reverso also has an online thesaurus that shares synonyms and antonyms. Use the word suggestions to improve your sentences depending on the context.

Reverso Cons

1. Limited Language Services

Besides the vocabulary lists and vocabulary enhancement suggestions, there’s nothing extraordinary about Reverso’s grammar checker. I found the app offers limited service since it can’t detect redundant words, inclusive language, and unnecessary adverbs.

2. No Plagiarism Checker

Reverso doesn’t have a plagiarism checker that allows you to look for duplicate content. I would only recommend this tool for simple grammar and spelling features. But if you do academic and blog writing, you need a program with a plagiarism checker feature.

3. Poor Customer Service

Reverso doesn’t have an online chat with users who are experiencing difficulty. Instead, they have a contact form where you enter your name, email, country, and other information. You need to enter several unnecessary personal details for filling out the request or feedback.

This form of customer service might put your privacy at risk, not to mention their slow response rate. It would be better if Reverso had a chat or email support to quickly assist users who want to improve their experience with the software.

The software company doesn’t disclose a company email where users can directly reach out to them. But they provided a link you can click if you need information about their solutions for companies.

Reverso Pricing

Reverso guarantees user satisfaction mainly because it is completely free. I love that it’s a free tool for writers, but recommend that it’s best for minimal work and maybe even in conjunction with other programs. Also, you have the option to sign up for free.

The free account lets you keep track of your previous searches. Create one if you plan to use Reverso regularly to keep track of your writing.

Reverso vs. Grammarly

Grammarly Editor is another AI-powered application that allows you to have mistake-free and clear writing. It also corrects spelling, grammar, and writing style errors with corresponding Grammar rule explanations.

Let’s compare this leading grammar software with Reverso.

Translation

I have to say, this is one of the best features. Grammarly has no translation service, so Reverso is a clear winner in this round. It provides an easy way to learn new languages, their pronunciation, and how to conjugate them. Get to know a myriad of unique expressions and foreign words which you can use in real life.

But there’s Google Translate for that! Reverso’s translation tool will only be helpful for those whose job is to translate writing pieces into different languages and correct them. Without the spelling and grammar checker, Reverso wouldn’t make an impact.

Spelling and Grammar Checker

Instead of writing everything and clicking “check,” Grammarly provides real-time suggestions as the user types. It’ll save time because it automatically spots the error way before you get to the revision phase of your paper.

Meanwhile, Reverso requires you to type or paste your text on the space and click enter. I didn’t like that. You won’t receive real-time suggestions on the web editor, although the loading time for corrections is relatively quick.

The spelling and grammar checker of Grammarly is also more accurate. It spots more errors that Reverso can’t, such as passive voice, overused words, offensive terms, etc. If you only need to correct obvious grammar issues, you can settle with Reverso.

Grammarly’s style of reporting is also more detailed and educational. It doesn’t just tell you when something is wrong, but it also explains why it’s wrong. This feature is what will help one become a better writer.

The suggestions for Grammarly come in a quick view or a full explanation on the sidebar. For instance, if you accidentally type “doesnt” instead of “doesn’t,” Grammarly will tell you that “doesnt” is not in the dictionary and give you punctuation suggestions to correct it.

Customization

Reverso doesn’t let you customize your preferred genre, audience, and writing style. It only enables you to pick the language you’re using.

With Grammarly, you can pick the English variation you’re using, the tone of your writing, and your audience. This feature is perfect because writing pieces employ different standards according to their type, location, and readers.

Plagiarism Checker

Originality is a must in your writing if you’re a student who writes research papers or an SEO content writer. Only Grammarly offers a plagiarism checker alongside its grammar and spell checker. It also has a language and citation assistant, which you can use for giving credits.

It underlines plagiarized parts of the text and shows the proper source. This feature works for the Grammarly app and if you install Grammarly in Microsoft Word but doesn’t work in Google Docs.

Pricing

Reverso is free since its budget relies on advertising. Feel free to translate your text while conducting grammar and spell checks at zero cost.

Grammarly also has a free version that offers more features than Reverso. It identifies basic spelling and grammar mistakes better than other free checkers. But you can’t enjoy its plagiarism detector and writing style suggestions on the free version.

The premium price for Grammarly might be too high if you’re an occasional writer who doesn’t need in-depth proofreading. It’s $144 annually ($12/month), which might be high for some just wanting to test it out. If this is your case, try the month-by-month option for $30.

Customer Service

Reverso’s form-only customer service may not be a dealbreaker, but it’s nothing compared to Grammarly’s customer service.

They have a support team in different parts of the world to give quick answers to your question. You can visit their support page or submit a request for your concerns. You can also mail them at 548 Market Street, #36410, San Francisco, CA, 94104.

Reverso vs. Grammarly: The Verdict

Both Reverso and Grammarly are reliable at correcting obvious spelling and grammar mistakes. Only choose Reverso if you want free editing software that provides translations to different languages.

Overall, nothing still beats the comprehensive features of Grammarly. Personally, it’s my go-to tool for everything I do; from content writing and editing to polishing my works of fiction. This tool will guarantee that your writing is nearly perfect from plagiarism detection to writing style suggestions and educational explanations.
