Number and number are two words that are spelled identically but are pronounced differently and have different meanings, which makes them heteronyms. We will examine the definitions of the words number and number, where these words came from, and a few examples of their use in sentences.

Number (NUM ber) means an arithmetical value, an amount, a quantity. Number (NUM mer) is the comparative of numb. Numb is an adjective that describes something without feeling or sensation, either physically or emotionally. The superlative is numbest. The word numb is derived from the medieval word nome, which means to deprive of feeling.
