Clean vs. cleanse
Clean = to literally remove dirt, filth, or stains from. Cleanse = to figuratively clean.

Distinct vs. distinctive
Distinct = (1) easily distinguishable from other things, (2) discrete, or (3) easy to see. Distinctive = characteristic or serving to identify.
Gargle vs. gurgle
Gargle = to pass air through liquid suspended in the back of the throat. Gurgle = to flow in an irregular current, or to make a noise resembling liquid flowing in an irregular current.

Parricide vs. patricide
Traditionally, patricide is the murder of one’s father or the murderer of one’s father, and patricide is the murder of a close family member. Today, through, they are mostly used interchangeably, usually in reference to father murder.
Interpretative vs. interpretive
The longer form has the edge in British publications. The shorter, newer form now prevails everywhere else.
