Fair = (1) of pleasing appearance, (2) just to all parties, (3) moderately good, and (4) an event or gathering held for the selling of goods or for public entertainment. Fare = (1) a transportation charge, (2) a passenger who pays a transportation charge, (3) food and drink, and (4) to get along.

Both describe things that are not well maintained, but unkempt usually describes people, and unkept usually describes things.

Dampen, damper, dampener

Damper = (1) something that deadens, restrains, or depresses, (2) an adjustable plate for controlling a draft, and (3) one that deadens vibrations. Dampen = (1) to deaden sound, and (2) to make slightly wet. Dampener = something that dampens.
