Ad vs. add

  • Ad has one main use in today’s English: it’s short for advertisement. The word has born a few other senses in its history, but the others are now used seldom if ever.

    Add is a verb meaning (1) to calculate the total of multiple elements, and (2) to expand or increase with an addition. It does not conventionally function as an abbreviation of advertisement.
