Victory lap and honour lap

A victory lap is a circuit around a racetrack that a race participant takes in celebration of winning a race. The victory lap gives the crowd a chance to bestow appreciation upon the racer, and gives the racer a chance to enjoy the appreciation of his feat. Foot racers and automobile racers both take victory laps when they win their races. Racehorses also take victory laps, though in this case, the victory lap also gives the animal a chance to cool down. The term victory lap is also used as a metaphor to describe someone enjoying the accolades bestowed upon him after a success. Victory lap is also used in a somewhat joking manner to describe extra years that an undergraduate student takes in order to obtain a four-year degree. Victory lap is a North American term.

A lap of honour is a circuit around a racetrack that a race participant takes in celebration of winning a race. The term lap of honour is a British English term.
